Summer Skate Camp - December 12 to 17 - 2009.

Foreword by Dallas Oberholzer:

“It’s the spirit of discovery and exploration that brought me to Indigo Skate Camp. It’s this sense of boundless adventure, which I wish to share with this year’s campers.”

Be prepared to walk away from your camp experience as fearless as the rest of the Indigo skaters you will meet at the camp. You will no doubt be amazed at the sense of community and support from all skaters that make up Indigo Skate Camp. Our strength has always been in the number of participants we attract to our facility, with an average number of 50 skaters a day attending our after school day care program at camp, I am convinced that our skate park in the Valley of 1 000 Hills is the most popular park in the country right now – crazy but true!

Say no more – there has never been a better time to visit Indigo Skate Camp.

Back to the itinerary:
The concept of this year’s much anticipated camp is to take you to as many skate parks as possible. All you skaters from anywhere but Durban are starved for skate spots. We have set a goal of skating 10 skate parks / skate spots within the 6 days at skate camp. This mammoth mission will require us to spend a few nights away from the camp to cover the extra miles of visiting skate spots inland and up the North Coast as far as Richards Bay.
Day to Day itinerary: ( note, the following is not finalized as we are flexible to our groups needs).

Dec 12:
arrive at camp (with your signed indemnity form) at any point of arrival – bus / train station or airport. Spend the day skating and chilling at the North Beach Skate Park.
Drive up to Indigo Skate Camp and receive warm welcome from our Zulu dancers.
Spend night in traditional Zulu Huts.

Dec 13: Being a Sunday, its time to go street skating in Pietermaritzburg at spots within the University and public skate park. After a full day of skating we will head further inland to an enchanted valley where we will spend the night at Lelani hot springs.

Dec 14: After a morning dip in the hot springs, we will head back towards the coast to go skate the new Richards Bay Skate Park. We will then spend the night in Richards Bay.

Dec 15: We then travel South to visit concrete skate parks built in the 70’s scattered along the coast, ending up in Eshowe where we will spend the evening.

Dec 16: After an early morning nature walk high up on boardwalks in the tree tops, we will head out to skate Ballito Bowl and Wave House. This evening we head back to Indigo Skate Camp.17 – Return all skaters to your train/ plane or bus stations.

Note: Due to the mobility of this camp, we require all campers to bring their sleeping bags.

Accommodation
Indigo Skate Camp is a community based project. Income from our camps is shared within the local community for services provided. Over the past eight years we have developed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Msomi household who had the foresight to allow us to build a skate park on their property.

The hospitality of the Msomi family is most welcoming as they are most grateful to have us stay in their large household of eight rondavels. The Indigo Skate Camp has made many 1st world improvements to the household. Campers will sleep in comfortable beds in one of two dormitory rondavels. There is a video lounge / hut, as well as the Ancestors Rondavel which we utilize for lectures. We have built showers and two flushable toilets for the campers.

Skate Park at Skate Camp
We recently received funding from The Sports Trust as well as Element USA to build a uniquely African park. This facility is in a natural setting in the canopies of acacia trees overlooking the Umgeni river and the Village of Isithumba.

The Msomi skate park is located in the backyard of the Msomi household. The park has a 5 ft ramp joined by the hip to a 9ft ramp with a 12 ft vert extension. In between the two ramps is a concrete flat land section with a 4ft flat bank. The park has floodlights for night sessions.
